TMM Accessibility Policy (downloadable pdf)
Friends House staff are committed to openly communicating about and responding to the needs of the many types and degrees of disability.
Wheelchairs
Friends House is accessible to wheelchairs via the e-door at the back, north east entrance off of the parking lot. The meeting room, dining room, sun room, library and kitchen are all on the ground floor and are wheelchair accessible. The second floor lounge is not.
On the ground floor, one of the three available washrooms is accessible to non-motorized wheelchairs, with a 32-inch wide entrance, clearance for turning and sink, tap, soap and towels which can be reached from a wheelchair.
On the ground floor there is a bedroom with an en suite washroom that is fully accessible to motorized wheelchairs. Now and then, this bedroom is occupied by overnight guests, so it is useful if Friends House staff know if access to this washroom is needed.
There are 1-inch transitions from the main hallway to the front foyer and the dining room which are facilitated by movable rubber ramps. The transition to the front foyer is permanently in place, and the one to the dining room is kept behind the dining room door.
There are two 2-inch transitions from the front foyer to the sun room, facilitated by two removable aluminum ramps, kept in the sun room alcove.
Friends House has two wheel chairs and a number of walkers available for use, stored in the basement. Ask the person on duty for assistance.
Service Animals
Service animals for disabilities (eg. vision loss, epilepsy, autism or anxiety disorder) are welcome at Friends House.
Staff Help
Friends House staff are committed to ensuring that Friends House is as accessible as can be, and are trained in awareness around various forms of disability including vision, hearing, deafblindness, speech and language impairment, learning, intellectual developmental and mental health disabilities, and disabilities requiring assistive devices, service animals or support people.
Feedback
We welcome and encourage feedback on how Friends House is doing in providing accessible service, and are eager to learn about what we could be doing better. If you have feedback, please contact us in person at the house, or by email, via the form below, or by phone: 416-921-0368.
Feedback or complaints will be taken to the Resident Friend / Manager, who will respond. Feedback requiring further input may be forwarded to either the Personnel Committee or the House and Premises Committee, both of which meet monthly.
We also encourage you to participate in Friends House Accessibility Survey.
