1. Emergency Evacuation
(For fires, and also any other emergencies requiring evacuation, including but not limited to bomb threats, chemical spills or leaks, natural disasters and incidents caused by severe weather.)
The Friend on duty is responsible for the evacuation of the building. Communication must be made with all occupants of Friends House. To the extent possible, it should be made in a manner that does not further endanger the safety of anyone, such as by inciting mass panic.
To evacuate the building:
After the emergency is over, fill out Form M of the Health and Safety Policy and submit to the Resident Friend and the Personnel Committee Clerks.
For complete fire prevention and response details (including building and alarm equipment details, prevention policies and responsibility delegation), Consult Friends House Fire Safety Plan

To evacuate the building:
- Leave the area of the fire (or other emergency). Take everybody you meet with you to the median at the front of the house, between the sidewalk and the road.
- Close but do not lock all doors behind you
- Activate the fire alarm at one of the pull boxes if it hasn’t already been activated
- Collect from the first floor office the Fire Plan and the guest register and list of all the people in the House requiring assistance to evacuate in an emergency.
- Call 9-1-1. Do not assume this has been done.
- While waiting for the Fire Department (and any other emergency service) to arrive, go to the median in front of the House on Lowther Ave. and try to determine who was in the house when the fire broke out, their current location and condition, in order to advise the Fire Department when they arrive.
- Unless made impossible by the fire (or other emergency), wait for the Fire Department by the front door, to advise the fire fighters (or other service workers) of the conditions at the House, location of people who may still be inside, access points etc.
- Do not reset fire alarm until TORONTO FIRE SERVICES gives the “all clear"
After the emergency is over, fill out Form M of the Health and Safety Policy and submit to the Resident Friend and the Personnel Committee Clerks.
